Get that pen and paper ready!
- Remove all infected fruit from the trees, and any fruit with puncture marks. If in doubt throw it out! You may also want to bag the fruits, see next!
- Cover all new fruits on the trees with a brown paper bag and band. This will help the fruit ripen and keep away fruit fly!
- Wash all dishes thoroughly
- Clear every drain and pipe
- Wash dish cloths in the washing machine to remove scents
- Cover all fruits from the grocer in an airtight container and keep in the fridge. Yes, lock it down!
- Use or discard all ripe fruit. This includes any preserved fruits that you may keep in the cupboard such as raisins, prunes etc.
- Any fermented products that are made from fruits need to be stored and closed well, preferably in the fridge. This includes cordials!
- Clean up the kitchen remove any fermented smells that may attract fruit fly. Let them fly somewhere else, I say!
- Remove all garbage and do not reuse the plastic bag, and clean the bin well with an antiseptic, remember our plan is getting rid of fruit flies so we must follow all the steps.
- Clean your fridge exceptionally well to remove any attracting scents. Vanilla essence will work perfect for this.
- Clean the whole kitchen area and anywhere you may think juice or crumbs may have fallen
- Remove all your compost and dig it into the ground for your next garden bed. Any rotten compost that is still composting must be removed and disposed of. Dig it down really, really deep!
- Clean up all Beer cans and any soda (soft drinks) cordial containers etc!

Follow the same plan as above but take one more step. Tomatoes have a soft skin and the fruit fly can pierce a green tomato so you will need to remove all the fruits and throw them in a sealed bag.
Once all the fruits have gone you should still have flowers on your tomatoes so don’t panic, you will have new fruits again.
Repellent of fruit fly
